Flights to China: Why US Airlines Are Pushing Back
Flights between the US and China are still running at a fraction of pre-pandemic levels. During his White House visit on Sept. 24, China's President Xi Jinping said both sides "may also increase direct flights." US airlines, through the trade group Airlines for America, oppose adding more, because some Chinese flights to the US can cross Russian airspace and US airlines can't. Each country's airlines are allowed about 50 round trips a week, down from more than 150 each before 2020. As of Sept. 28, no plan to add flights has been announced.
